Previous Post – Follow Justice & Justice Alone

-My friend, Jarrod McKenna, created the above image as a helpful challenge to the Kony 2012 controversy.  I share his dissatisfaction with aspects of the approach Invisible Children has taken, especially with respect to the lack of non-violent solutions.  This is why Jonathan Wilson-Hartgroves response is so timely.

-I will say, however, that my concerns with Invisible Children- while significant- do not lead me to completely dismiss the value of their efforts.  I appreciated Rachel Held Evan’s collection of perspectives and information about the issues.  We need to consider all facets.

-Once again, my friend Kurt Willems hits it out of the part with a new series, but this time over at Red Letter Christians:

  • Whose Kingdom, Which Lord? Jesus and Nationalism, Part 1
  • Whose Kingdom, Which Lord? Jesus & Nationalism, Part 2 (Caesar Augustus and Empire)
  • Whose Kingdom, Which Lord? Jesus & Nationalism, part 3 (Give to Caesar What is Caesar’s?)
  • Whose Kingdom, Which Lord? Jesus & Nationalism, part 4 (When Two Empire’s Collide)
  • Whose Kingdom, Which Lord? Jesus & Nationalism, part 5 (Concluding Exhortations… Native Americans as Victims of Nationalism)

-I am currently reading the “Hunger Games Trilogy”, which I want to complete before the film version of the first book hits theatres this month.  However, what has really spurred me on is the new e-book “The Hunger Games and the Gospel” by Julie Clawson.  Framed around the Beatitudes, I can hardly wait to dive in.

Follow Justice & Justice Alone

Previous Post – International Women’s Day

Like many of you, I am a huge fan of TED videos.  If you have not spent much time at their site, take an hour or so and dig in.  It is well worth it.  I could give a long list of favorites, but a recent release has won me out, so I wanted to share it here.

The following video features Bryan Stevenson, the founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, fighting poverty and challenging racial discrimination in the criminal justice system.  In this video, Stevenson explores justice, poverty, racism and more.  Here are some sample quotes:

“The opposite of poverty is not wealth. … In too many places, the opposite of poverty is justice.”

“We have a system of justice in that treats you much better if you’re rich and guilty than if you’re poor and innocent. Wealth, not culpability, shapes outcomes.”

Please take the next 20 mins to view this film.  Be sure to give it some serious consideration and its implications for Christians:
