Faith, Poverty & Mental Illness

Previous Post – 2010 Lehotsky Award

One of the completely unexpected things that has happened to me in the years of living and ministering in an urban context is the crash-course education I’ve had with issues of mental health & mental illness.  From narcissism to bi-polar disorder, from hypochondria to paranoid schizophrenia, we’ve had to learn a whole new language- a whole new world!- that the church never prepared us for.  While some of these experiences have been deeply tragic, others have filled us with hope and humility.

When I was asked by Tony Campolo to write a blog post for his excellent new Red Letter Christians site, I was thrilled.  I could not think of a better tale to tell than about our friendship with Jimmy, a young homeless guy who lives with us off and on.

2010 Rev. Harry Lehotsky Award

Previous Post – Shall We Overcome?

One of the main reason Kim and I are living and serving in Winnipeg’s West End was because of the invitation of Harry Lehotsky, the late pastor of New Life Ministries.  For the early years of our ministry, Harry & his church were a daily part of lives- example, mentor, neighbour and friend.  When he died of pancreatic cancer in 2006, it was a huge loss to everyone who knew him and to many who do not.  He was named to the Order of Canada and Attorney General also created the Rev. Harry Lehotsky Award for Community Activism to recognize individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to their communities.

I was deeply moved and humbled to receive word that I had been awarded the Rev. Harry Lehotsky Award for Community Activism for 2010.  While the recognition is encouraging and the attention will help us continue our work here in the West End, that is not what is most important to me.  What is most meaningful to me is to have our work honoured in Harry’s name.  He played (and continues to play) a huge role in who we are and what we do.

May we be able to live even a fraction of the example and perseverance that Harry demonstrated.
