It is not uncommon for people to be somewhat surprised to learn that my wife & I are the co-directors of a Youth With A Mission (YWAM) ministry centre. People often say something like, “Nothing against YWAM, but they don’t readily come to mind when I think of the kind of missional & church planting ministries you guys are doing”. Fair enough. While YWAM is far more missional than many people realize, we are atypical in many ways.
In our passion and commitment to being and shaping missional Christians, we have committed to taking those aspects of our YWAM that are strongest and integrating them with the truths we are discovering about spiritual and missional formation. One area that we have done this is with respect to our Justice Discipleship Training School (JDTS). I am convinced that this program is one of the most transformative opportunities for developing a global, missional worldview with a foundation in Biblical justice (i.e. Micah 6:8).
This year the JDTS has made some further changes to more deeply integrate active missional participation with the spiritual formation in the “classroom”. The small group of students will share life together in the inner city throughout the first phase of the school in Winnipeg. They will then participate in service & ministry in Thailand, addressing justice issues with a Gospel-centered approach. They will also spend some time in Vancouver, working with the poor displaced by the 2010 Winter Olympics.
While the school is almost full booked, we do have a few more openings. Particularly we need to see at least one more male student apply. PLEASE help us get the word out about this opportunity. Perhaps you might be interested yourself. Check out the website and let us know.
